UNEMPLOYED AT GISBORNE.

[BY TELEGRAPH.—PRESS ASSOCIATION.] Gisborne, Wednesday. In response to the general statement that labour for bush-felling was scarce in this district, the Labour Bureau sent a man to investigate, and after staying a few days he leftfand the Bureau sent from Auckland and Wellington '23 men, intimating that more would follow in a few days. These men landed here penniless, without provision having been made, for them. I hey were without food from Friday evening till Saturday at noon, when they intimated their strange condition to Sergeant-Major Moore, who provided them with a meal, and at once wired to the Bureau for instructions to maintain them until they obtained work. During the afternoon he received instructions to provide for them till Monday. On Monday, after a little trouble, eight of the men succeeded in finding employment. The rest have been tramping the country, and ten returned to town last night hungry and worn out, having been unable to obtain work. Ser- ! geant-Major Moore is maintaining them until the Bureau makes some provision for them. The men state that they have been grossly deceived by the Department, who told them they would _ be provided with work, tents, and tools immediately on arrival here, and also that the scale of pay had been arranged wich owners, whereas no such provision had been made. Wellington, Wednesday. Mr. Muck ay has been ordered by the Labour Bureau to go back to Gisborne and inquire into the allegations as to the treatment of the men who were sent up there to get work. _
