[BY TET«KfiRAF!f. —OWN* CORRESPONDENT.] Wi-ixiNcTOV, Wednesday. * CABIN' MI'.!".TINT,. Ministers "lit ill Cabinet this morning, the only member absent being Sir Patrick Buckley. Nothing lias transpired as to ! j nature of their deliberations. TIIK I.ATK MR. MAGARTItUR, M.H.R. The announcement of the death of the member fot llaniritikci has given occasion for the expression of universal sympathy. He was a comparatively young man. He leaves a widow and three young daughters. The death must have been very sudden, for letters were received from private friends stating he would be in Wellington yesterday. Mr. Mac Arthur came to the colony in 18315. In 187*2 he became submanager of the Manchester Block ; in 1882 he succeeded Mr. ITalcotnbe as manager. Ho worked for some years on the Otago gold fields. He was supposed to bo the coming Treasurer of the colony. THE VACANT SEAT. Messrs. Bruce, Arkwright, Stevens (Stevens and Gorton), and Pirani are spoken of as likely candidates. The two first-mentioned would stand in the interest of the Opposition, the two last in the Government interest. It is said, however, that Messrs. Arkwriglit and Bruce are absent frotn tho colony. Mr. Stevens is a veteran friend of the Government now in ollice, and would receive their support if ho came forward. He is a business man of much influence in the district. If Mr. Bruce came forward he would undoubtedly bo the favourite candidate of the Opposition. Mr. Pi run i would be the recognised labour candidate.
