POLICE COURT.— Wednesday. [Before Dr. Giles, R.M.J
Drunkenness.—Henry Williams, an habitual drunkard, was sentenced to one month's imprisonment. William Montgomery was fined 40s and costs, or, in default, 14 days' imprisonment. Sleeping Oijt.—Elizabeth Kennedy was charged with having been found, on the night of the 18th inst., without lawful excuse in a dwelling in Chapel-street, the property of Abraham Bowden, defendant having been previously convicted as an idle and disorderly person, and also as a rogue and vagabond. Ann Cain was also charged with having been found on the same premises at the same time. Each of the defendants pleaded guilty. SergeantMajor Pratt explained that entrance had been obtained by forcing open one of the doors of the house, which had been securely fastened. Each of the women had a bad record. Elizabeth Kennedy was sentenced to three weeks', and Ann Cain to seven days' imprisonment with hard labour. Breaking a Window.—Norah Williams was charged with wilfully and maliciously breaking a large pane of glass, valued at £3, the property of John Allen. Defendant pleaded guilty. Sergeant-Major Pratt stated that about four o'clock on Tuesday afternoon accused came to the Waverley Hotel and asked for a long beer. The barman, however, refused to serve her, as she was under the influence of drink. She then went outside and deliberately threw a stone through one of the large windows, which was valued at £3. John Allen gave evidence as to the value of the window. Dr. Giles said he had seldom seen a worse record than that against this woman. She was fined 40s and costs, or, in default, one month's imprisonment, and ordered to pay for the damage done, or, in default of payment, an additional month's imprisonment.
