KATIKATI.

On Monday, September 21, at Castle Grace, Captain Macmillan's basket carriage met with an accident. After the horse (which is a young one) was put to the machine he was left unattended for a minute while the carriage-house door was being closed. This startled the horse, and he set off at full gallop. There being no one in the machine to guide the horse he came in violent contact with one of the trees at the side of the avenue, which threw him down and upset the machine. Fortunately no damage was done except a little to tho carriage and harness.

On September 22 Mr. Charles Kelly found a valuable horse belonging to himself in one of his paddocks with a broken leg. supposed to have been the effects of a kick from another horse, and had to call for the services of Mr. Robinson, from Larkspur, to shoot the poor animal. Tenders have been received by the subcommittee for the clearing of the grounds and repairs at No. 1 School, as follows George Vesey Stewart, 18s (3d; Hugh M. Stewart, £2 us; William Mulgrew, £2 8s; William Busby, £3 12s Gd ; George T. Hyde, £2 15s ; William Taylor, £4 ; John Wilson, £4 Lis, The sub-committee, Messrs. W. J. Gray and Robert Hunter, accepted the tender of Hugh M. Stewart, the work to be performed to their satisfaction.

The weather for the last week has been showery, with glimmers of sunshine, in fact splendid spring weather, and the whole settlement is clothed with a beautiful emerald green mantle. Wheat and oats are looking well, and promise an abundant crop, whilst our early potatoes will be fit for the table in a very few weeks. There is now a good market within a few miles, at the ever-increasing gold mines of Waihi.— Correspondent.

RAGLAN. Tar, cutter Coralie left here on Wednesday last for Onehunga with a full cargo of flax, etc. It is the intention of Captain Clark to keep her running regularly in this trade. The s.s. Glenelg, Captain Norbury, arrived here early on Thursday morning, and left again for Onehunga about noon. A meeting of the ratepayers of the Raglan Town District and Whaingaroa Road Board was held at the Council Chambers, Raglan, on Saturday, the 19th instant. The object of the meeting was to consider the advisability of taking a poll of the ratepayers authorising the Council to borrow the sum of £242 for the refund of debts on the Raglan wharf. There were few ratepayers present, Mr. C. Sutton being elected chairman. It was proposed by Mr. Mitchell, and seconded by Mr. Pegler, "That a poll be taken on Octobcr 10th." Carried unanimously. The clerk explained that there would be two polling places, one at Raglan and the other at Cogswell's, Waitetuna; and that if this poll was successful, a notice of motion would be made in the Council to refund the special rate, struck for wharf, purposes. After some desultory conversation, the meeting concluded with a vote of thanks to the chairman. The Gospel Temperance social, which had to be postponed on Friday in consequence of the inclemency of the weather, was held on Monday evening at the Wesleyan chapel, Mr. Meieklejohn, M.A., in the chair. There was a very fair and an excellent programme of songs, readings, and recitations was given and greatly appreciated by the audience. Mr, Murray is to address the electors on Saturday next at seven p.m. Dr. Browne did not turn up last week to the great disappointment of his supporters. I believe there is a requisition (joins' round for signature asking Sir G. Maurice O'Rorke allow himself to he nominated. If he does, I think he will stand a good show of being elected.— Correspondent.]
