THE NEW SERVICE WEAPON.
With the new service weapon which has excited so much controversy of late, and with the barrel of that weapon adapted to the mechanism of the Maxim gun, great achievements (says the Times) were done on Saturday afternoon at the 1080 yards firing point by Captain Acland, who was in charge of the weapon. There was some fine shooting, albeit there was some rather erratic work, owing to the fact that the gun, being mounted 011 a simple tripod, moved a little to the right in consequence of the vibration. Sighted and fired by Sir Henry Halford, the gun made, it is reported credibly, five bull'seyesandfourinners in the course of a very few seconds. Then there was an adjournment—made easily, since the whole gun is capable of being carried 011 a Life Guardsman's horse—to the 200 yards' range. Here the trial proved that it was a terrible weapon, capable of mowing down troops as surely as a scythe cuts meadow grass.
