Owing to certain accusations made to the Controller and Auditor-General by a certain member of the Thames County Council (name unknown) to the effect that the accounts of the Council were nut accurately kept, an auditor sent by the Department visited the Thames last week, and in accordance with instructions, made a strict and searching inquiry into the accounts. As a result of the investigation made, a copy of tho auditor's report was read at the County Council mooting to-night, in the course of which the auditor stated that he had every reason to be satisfied with the entire accuracy of the county accounts. It appears it was suggested to the auditor that the "Council was not receiving full value for the water supplied through the county race, and that the employes of some batteries substituted a small nozzle for a large one when the engineer was about to measure the quantity of water used, and replace the small one by the larger one '. hen he went away. From inquiries made the auditor stated that he had every reason to believe that this had been done. The majority of the councillors expressed great indignation at the base charges made by one of themselves, and also gratification that the grave charges against their clerk had nob been sustained. * A desire was also expressed to discover the author of the charges, and ultimately, with this end in view, the following resolution was carried, "That as the late severe investigations of the County accounts by the Inspector of Audits, was induced by a communication containing baseless charges against the clerk and treasurer of the Council, or both, from a member of this Council whose name is nob given, that an application should be made to the AuditorGeneial for copies of the correspondence, in order to ascertain what action it may be necessary, to take under the circumstances."
