DOINGS OF A ROAD BOARD.

TO THE EDITOR. \ ■■~ Sir,—Will you kindly permit me to say a few words on the subject under the above heading. There are many others beside Mrs. McMurray that condemn the action of the Road Board in suffering this nuisance to continue after the repeated appeals to stop the depositing of the city refuse on land in the occupation of Mr. T. Johnson, New North Road. The gentlemen comprising this Board are the pick of the Mount Albeit district. After Mrs. McMurray's letter we are compelled to pause and ask ourselves if it is possible that these gentlemen know the great evil that is being done to this locality by suffering this refuse dust from .the city, containing all kinds of noxious matter. We, the residents in this neighbourhood, view with alarm what the end will be, as the continual supply of this refuse is at the rate of some three, four, and five loads a-day. Many persous passing along the main road are making great complaints of the stench, having to hold their noses. It is painful to be called upon to bring this matter before the public We made our choice to come outside the city to live to be free from many of the noxious matters of the city. We have invested our moneys in properties in this healthy locality, depriving ourselves of many conveniences of the city. We take it as very unkind of the Board and all concerned to force "upon us that which they themselves would not suffer to be ,in their own localities. We most strongly protest against the appointment of two medical men to report upon this nuisance. Wo think, we aw able to say what is i

good for our health, viz., pure air or stenches. We question whether the Board can spend ratepayers' money to pay medical men. The Road Board should : be like Caesar's wife, above suspicion. - It is quite dear that public duties must no longer be neglected or cast aside. Ic is also a grave question for the City Council to consider, as this is the water-shed of the city water. If this refuse is stills deposited, the increase willl also increase the decomposition of the refuse. If this refuse is so harmless as some would have us, believe it is, why are the City Council determined to send it outside their boundaries? We trust the Board will take the steps of wise men.— I am, etc., , 0; Page.
