ANNUAL ELECTION OF OFFICERS. A special meeting of tho Auckland Branch of the New Zealand Educational Institute, to elect officers for the next year, was held on Saturday in the Wellosley-street School, Mr. J. Scott in the chair.
There - were about a dozen teachers present.. Mr. Heriot was unanimously chosen president, Mr. Drafiln re-elected secretary. Mr. Lippiatt treasurer, Messrs. Scott and Hog wood vice-presidents, and Messrs. Rust, Hoaking, Edwards, Warren, Brown, Fidlor, and Haines, Committee of Management. Mr. Hekiot, on taking tho chair, was warmly congratulated by various members, and returned his earnest thanks for the honour conferred on him ; and said ho would do his utmost for tho welfare of the brench. A hearty vote of thanks was then accorded to the retiring officers, Mr. O'Donoghue emphasising the valuable services rendered by Mr. Draflin, the secre-
tary. A desultory conversation ensued as to the best means to take to increaso the influence of tho Institute, and various proposals and suggestions were mado, but nothing decided was done. The President suggested that a paper' dealing with the topics now agitating the public mind should bo read at the next meeting, since he felt sure that the views of the teachers upon such questions as homo lessons, quarter money, corporal punishment, and adjustment of salaries would be appreciated by tho public. After some discussion he yielded to a request to bring up such a paper himself at the next meeting to be held at 11 a.m. that day month.
A party of vegetarians, who were boarding_ at a water-cure establishment, while taking a walk in tho fields wore attacked by a bull, which chased them' furiously out of his pasture. " That's your gratitude, is it, you great hateful thing ?" exclaimed one of the ladies, panting with fright and fatigue. " After this I'll eat beef three times a day 1"
