THE OFFICE OF AGENTGENERAL.
[BY TELEGRAPH.—OWN CORRESPONDENT.] Wellington, Tuesday. Several times I have had to refer to rumours thab one of the candidates for the office of Agent-General would be Sir Win, Jervois, late Governor of the colony ; bub I was told thab this was not the real aspect of the question. Ib was rather time Sir Wm. Jervois would accept the office if it were offered to him. At that time many names were mentioned as probable candidate's for the office. It was thought that so excellent a piece of patronage would nob be taken away from- the number of very few prizes which the colony gives to a successful politician. It is stated to-day, upon good authority, that a communication has been received from Sir Wm. Jervois, and the public believes that the communication from the late Governor of the colony relates to ah offer thab has been made to him of bhe Agenb:Gpnera!ship. The Premier declines to mallet public the contents of the communication, and this fact has rather whebted curiosity.
