THE REGENT SHAM FIGHT. l/f/<:.>/ Major Goring, officer commanding r the permanent and volunteer forces, has forwarded the following circular' to the staff officers and officers commanding companies who took part in the . sham r . light held at Deyonporb on the Queen's birthday :—•\ • Brigade Office, Auckland, 26th May, 1891. The officer commanding wishes to express to tho officers taking; a part in the recent sham fight . his gratification at the careful .way in which they carried out his instructions, and the great interest they evinced in their work. The umpire and commanders of the attacking and defending forces showed much energy in the execution of their duties. The non-com-missioned officers worked well under their officers, and the men were steady and quiet, obeying readily orders given them. Notice on the fight will be issued iii a day or two. ■ • % - AUCKLAND if AVALS. ' ' The Auckland Naval Artillery met at the' Mount Eden range on Saturday last /to complete the / firing . for the company's champion belt. ' Tho weather , was very favourable for good shooting, bub the firing was very indifferent. The ranges were 200, 300, 400, and 500 yards, five shots at each range. Seaman R. Smyth wins the belt with a score of 90 points. Lieutenant W. Smith was in charge. . . . - RIFLE MATCH : PERMANENT ARTILLERY V. rOXSON'BY navAls. ; •_ . i An interesting rifle match took place Jon Mount Eden Range on Saturday afternoon between tho Permanent Artillery and the Ponsonby Navals, and resulted in a narrow victory for. the Navals by, nine point"?. The match was fired under ,the following conditions Seven men a-side, with • seven shots each at 200, , 300, and 400 yt-rds ranges. At 200 yards the JS'avals led by 21 points, at 300 yards they increased their lead to 2S points, and at .400 yards the Artillery decreased their opponents' lead by 19 points, thus leaving the JNavals victorious by nine points. The shooting was remarkably good throughout, the Navals scoring 511 and the Artillery 502, an average of 73 and 71 5-7tha respectively. Appended are the scores of both teams :—

' A team from the Victoria Rifles proceeded to Pukekohe on Saturday to fire the return match with the South Franklin Mounted Infantry. The team was under the charge of Colour-Sergeant Skinner. On arrival at Pukekohe the men were enter- , tained at breakfast by the Mounted Infantry, and, .as might be expected after their early start and long railway ride, soon made short, work of the good things provided for them. After breakfast the teams proceeded to the convincing ground, where the Pukekohe men hoped to wipe out their previous defeat by the Victorias, but were again unsuccessful although . malting jtv hard struggle for victory, the Victorias only winning the match, by 22 points. After the - match , both teams Hat down to dinner " at the Pukekohe Hotel, Major Harris presiding, when the health of both teams was drunk in bumpers. v In proposing the health of the winning team Major Harris said ' : although ■ they were beaten by the Victorias on two occasions, yet he hoped when they next met the Mounted Infantry would try and wipe out those defeats. Colour-Sergeant Skinner j suitably responded,, and apologised for the absence of the officers of his corps, who were to attend the presentation to Colonel' Shepherd which took placo that afternoon. The team were loud in the praise of the hearty manner in which they were entertained by the South Franklin men.
