t The Catholic Times, in the course of some remarks upon our education system, has the following —"Speaking for ourselves, and of our own experience, we can truthfully say, that some of the most bitter opponents of the system are school teachers themselves, and that everything written derogatory to the system, in the now celebrated New Zealand Herald article, has been said to us by school teachers, and members of Education Boards, over and over again. Independently of this, however, is it to be supposed that editors are incapable of making observations for themselves, and incapable of detecting a want of reading, of general information, and of manners, in theyoung men with whom they are brought into contact? • The fact is, that writers for the Press have unique and manifold sources of information regarding the working of the system, and are certainly more likely to be impartial judges of that system, and its real educational value, than gentlemen whose bread and butter depend upon it." The Waikato County Council have declined to grant the application made by a largelysigned petition from Huntly and the upper portion of the Rangiriri outlying district, asking that a second polling place be appointed for licensing elections. The election will be held in the Rangiriri School house on Saturday, the 2nd of May. Mr. W. Birss has been appointed presiding officer.
