Last night, at the Zealandia Rink, a glove-fight took place between Eugene Donovan and Sidney Barnes, for the middle-weight championship of New Zealand and a purse of £40. The former, who has for several-years held the championship, was the favourite, but his younger opponent proved too much for him, and won, after a splendidly-contested battle of 12 rounds. There were about 200 spectators present, and the whole proceedings were conducted in a most orderly and fair manner. Mr. W. Mountain officiated as referee with quiet decision and impartiality, and Mr. F. Winch performed the duties of timekeeper to the satisfaction of all. From the start Barnes forced the fighting, and proved himself a proficient boxer as well as able to take punishment, though perhaps in ring tactics he was somewhat inferior to his veteran antagonist. Barnes scored the first knock-down in the third round, bat it was not till the eighth that Donovan showed much sign of being worsted. In this bout he was severely punished by his opponent, and the latter kept going as vigorously as at the start, while Donovan had perceptibly tired. In the last three rounds Barnes had all the best of it, sending Donovan through the ropes several times. After a strong rally in the twelfth round, in which Donovan was knocked outside of the ring, he came forward visibly exhausted, and shook hands with his opponent, and acknowledged himself beaten. The result was received with cheers. A match is on the tapis between the 'winner and T. Williams, a boxer who has before aspired to the championship without success.
