POLICE COURT. —Saturday. [Before Dr. Giles, 8.M.1 Drunkenness. —One man, charged with a first offence, was discharged. Thomas Irwin was fined 5s and costs, or in default 24 hours' imprisonment. Damage to Property.—Thomas Irwin was further charged with wilfully and maliciously breaking a pane of glass valued 12s 6d, the property of Andrew Fernandez. Accused was also charged with unlawfully assaulting and beating Richard Best, on April 3, by striking him on the face. Act cused, who was a sailor belonging to one of ' the vessels of the squadron now in port, pleaded guilty to both charges. Dr. Giles said that the conduct of accused was very disgraceful, and it would be much better if he had stayed on his ship longer instead of coming ashore and actifig in this manner. On the first charge he fined accused 203, and ordered him to pay the cost of the class ; on the second he fined him 40s, or in default one month's imprisonment. House of 111-fame.Julia Wilson was charged with a breach of the Auckland City By-law No. 38, by keeping a house of ill-fame in Rokeby-street during the space of the last six months. This case had been heard on a previous occasion, and Dr. Giles had reserved judgment. Mr. Cotter appeared for the prosecution. Dr. Giles said the facts in this case were admitted. Mr. Earl had raised several objections against the by-law, bub ho held it to be legal and valid.
