THE REVENUE RETURNS.
CLOSE OF THE FINANCIAL YEARTHE SURPLUS. [BY TELEGRAPH.—-BRESS ASSOCIATION.] Wellington, Wednesday. The Customs duty for March was £122,713 against £123,607 for March, IS9O, and £146,501 in February. The receipts at the principal ports were: — Auckland, £29 158 ; Wellington, £23,840 ; Christchurch, £20,825; Duuedin, £25.715. The receipts for the year were £1,527, giving a surplus above the estimate of £74,733. In his statement published in January Sir Harry Atkinson estimated the surplus at £89,000, based on anticipated receipts of £400,000 during the first three months of this vear. The receipts have not been up to expectation. Last month it was expectoa the duties of the Ritnutaka's cargo would have come in, but owing to the holidays they were not collected. The beer duty for the year was £58,030, giving a surplus of £4030. The receipts for last* month were £5417, as against £5374 for the same month last year. Auckland contributed £11 SO ; Wellington, io7B ; Christchurch, £1013 ; Dunodin, £1237. ThqfGovernment anticipate that revenue for year will show a surplus of £50,000. The unauthorised expenditure has been for the Hist year abnormally large, and has reached the maximum of £100,000 to which Ministers are limited. [FY] TELEGRAPH.—OWN CORRESPONDENT.] 1 Wellington, Wednesday. Sane doubt has been expressed as to whether the results of the financial year would be so good as people expected. Custbms alone show actual receipts of £47, over the Treasurer's estimate, whicjh was £1,480,000. The total Customs revenue amounts to £1,527,000 odd. The reports of the Railway Commissioners show thatf the railway will return a large profit, but/ it will probably be reduced by a requisition for £29,000. It is true that the las| quarter of the financial year has not revised the full amount of revenue anticipated, but it is proportionately in advance of/the corresponding periods of previous roars. _____________
