ROTORUA NEWS.

[BY telegraph.—own correspondent.] Rotorua, Thursday. The past month, January, was the busiest month at the baths since they were opened. The large number of 2044 baths were taken, representing cash receipts £44. This speaks well for the growing popularity of the district, notwithstanding there were fewer visitors than during the corresponding period of the previous year. The number of baths taken during the past year were 10,632, representing 35, being £16 more than during the year 1889. The total revenue of the Town Board for the past year, the books of which have just been audited, was £462 4a 6d, exclusive of water rates, which are paid to the Government.

The springs during the early part of the week, when there was heavy rain, exhibited greater activity than usual, but they have again resumed their normal state. A party of tourists started for Tarawera mountain to-day, and the steam launch is afloat with a large number for Hamurana. To-day's coaches from Oxford and Okoroire brought 19 tourists, including Mr. and Mrs. S. Nathan, of Auckland, who come here to spend their honeymoon. Rear-Ad-miral Denison was also amongst the arrivals.

There was opened on Monday last by Father Holierhock a new Roman Catholic church at Tapuwaikura for the natives around Rotoiti Lake. A large number of natives were present at the ceremony, which was celebrated' with a feast.
