BLOOD STOCK SALES.

WELLINGTON PARK. A HIGHLY-PRICED YEARLING. The first of the thoroughbred yearling sales of the present season was held on Dec. 31, at Wellington Park, Mr. ' Motrin's stud farm, Mount Wellington. About three hundred persons were present, nearly all of whom went out from Auckland in brakes, carriages, etc. The weather was very unfavourable, and but for this there would probably have been a larger attendance. Amongst those who attended were Messrs. W. R. Wilson, J. Crozier, and Day, Australia; G. G. Stead and P. Butler, Christchurch; S. H. Gollan, W. Douglas, and J. D. Ormond, Napier ; D. O'Brien, Dunedin, and others from the South and various parts of the colony ; Messrs. J. Marshall, L. D. Nathan, Lieutenant-Colonel Carre, and many other Auckland residents. Mr. Eugene O'Conor, M.H.R. for theßullcr district, who is on a visit to Auckland, was present, in company with two other members of the House, Messrs. F. Lawry and T. Thompson, Mr. J. P. A. Philson, of the firm of Hunter and Nolan, was the auctioneer.

Tho salo commenced shortly after halfpast one o'clock. At that time a drizzling rain was falling. The first yearling to be led into the ring was the Captivator— Vivandiere filly, a grey, showing a good deal of power. Bidding was slow, the filly eventually becoming the property of Mr. C. Goodson, Hawera, for 35 guineas. There was a little better competition for tho colt by Woolbrokor—The Jilt, and lie was purchased for 125 guineas by Mr. W. Elliott, Waitara. A powerfully - built, strong-looking colt by Leolinus from Maid of Athol was next introduced ; and after a short run of 10-guinea bids, starting at 50 guineas, he became the property of Mr. W. Rathbone, Waipawa, for 100 guineas. Buyers still remained sluggish when a daughter of the game little Victoria, a chestnut filly by Nordenfeldt, was brought forward. She was quitted for 45 guineas to Mr. G. Wright, the well-known trainer, with little competition. A good-looking chostnub filly by Nordenfeldt —Yattacy was sold to Mr. J. B. Williamson for 90 guineas. Tho next yearling to be led into the ring was one of the best of the collection, a dark brown colt by Nordenfeldt from Teksum's dam, the New South Wales mare Albatross. A docile and tractable colt, he showed some timidity when he left his stall and saw the crowd, but when he was persuaded to enter the ring, his handsome proportions were greatly admired. He has an immense forequarter, and a beautiful head and neck. Altogether he shows great power, and is stamped unmistakeably with the well-known Musket character. Mr. 1). O'Brien started the bidding at 200 guineas, and it went up rapidly in bounds of ten guineas until the figures reached 330 guineas, at which price the yearling was sold to Mr. P. Butler. It was quite evident that ho was a great bargain at that sum ; and there is reason to believe that at least one of those present was inclined to go much higher than that to get possession of tlio coit. Mr. Crazier was the bidder of the 330 guineas, but when his name was announced he stated that he had purchased for Mr. Butler. The full sister to tho Auckland Cup winner Crackshot, a well-shaped filly by Nordenfeldt from Pungawersiwera, claimed a good deal of attention ; nevertheless, Mr. Philson had to wait some time for a bid. At length 100 guineas was made tho starting point, and then competition immediately became warm until at 200 guineas Mr. J. Marshall, the popular Auckland sportsman, became the owner. This purchase was received with a round of applause. Great admiration was expressed for the filly by St. Leger from that groat mare Necklace. Admirably formed, this yearling fills the eye everywhere, and gives every promise of being a worthy descendant of her dam. She declined at first to enter the ring, but when at last she was led in, buyers commenced at 100 guineas, and carried on a contest until Mr. George Wright, who was bidding on behalf of Mr. I/. D. Nathan, secured the filly at 310 guineas. There was now a brief pause, and then there came forth from hi.-< stall the yearling for whom it was evident everyone was waiting—the colt by Nordenfeldt from Frailty, dam of Trenton, Niagara, Cuirassier, and Cissy. All the morning he and tho Albatross colt in the adjoining box had been surrounded by groups of admirers, bub the majoiity gave their allegiance to tho Frailty colt, as being the finest yearling of the season ; and when he walked out there could bo no doubt that the bidding would be spirited. The colt looks more like a two-year-old than a yearling ; he is a very level built youngster, being low-set on short legs, and tho immense power across his quarters at cnce rivets the attention. Ho has plenty of throat and heart room, and a splendid set of legs and feet makes up one of the finest colts that ever entered a sale ring. Hardly had he appeared than Mr. Stead called out "eight, hundred J guineas but almost at the same moment Mr. O'Brien exclaimed, "I'll give you a thousand for him, first pop ! " This offer was hailed with great applause. A most interesting scene then occurred. Bidding began in downright earnest. Messrs. O'Brien, W. R. Wilson, Marshall, Day, and others set to, and 25-guinea bids came from all parts of the ring as fast as Mr. Philson could take them. It was a frequent occurrence for the same bid to be called out in three places at once. This went on until the figure of 1650 guineas was reached, and about this point Mr. Wilson retired, and Mr. Gollan calling 1675," Mr. Day offered "1700," and then also gave up, Mr. Marshall, who was acting for some oneelse, stopping aboutthe sametime. The contest now resolved itself into a duel between Mr. Gollan and Mr. O'Brien. Mr. Gollan's bid was " 1750," and immediately Mr. O'Brien, standing on the inside of the ring, prominent, called out " Eighteen hundred," when Mr. Gollan, who was in the centre of the crowd, quickly replied with "twenty-five." Mr. O'Brien then made his final bid, shouting "Two thousand, and that's the lot!" There was at this a burst of applause from the crowd, whose interest had become very great during - the few moments of this spirited competition ; but the applause had hardly been given when Mr. Gollan quietly repeated twenty-five." "Going at two thousand and twenty-five," exclaimed Mr. Philson, and then he closed his hands, and the colt, amidst cheers, became the property of Mr. Gollan at 2025 guineas, which is the highest price paid for a yearling in the Australasian colonies. A handsome filly, already named Brown Alice, by Nordenfeldt from Ouida, and closely related to Hilda, was the last of Mr. Morrin's yearlings, and, commencing at 150 guineas, tho bidding for her went up to 375 guineas, when she was purchased by Mr. Stead, the Canterbury sportsman.
