The Murray has inundated the low-lying lands in the Albury district, and many hundreds of sheep have been washed away. THE CONSECRATION OF A CATHEDRAL. Melbourne, January 22. St. Paul's Cathedral was consecrated by the primate to-day. The ceremony, which was impressive and imposing, was attended by His Excellency the Governor, and several bishops and clergy from throughout Australia. BROKEN HILL SHAREMARKET. ' Sydney, January 22. > The following are the current quotations for the principal silver mining shares at Broken Hill: —Proprietary, £13 6s ; Central, £5 17 ; North, £1 Is 9d; South, £5 3s 6d : Block 14, £6 15s ; Block 10, £14 2s 6d ; Junction, £2 9s 6d. THE FEDERAL COUNCIL. Hob art, January 22. The Federal Council is discussing Mr. Shiel's motion advocating the offer of better facilities for British settlers at the New Hebrides. Mr. Macrossan said the Victorian Government was practically asking Britain to assume the sovereignty of the islands in defiance of an agreement with France. A MAIL STEAMER QUARANTINED. Melbourne, January 22. The P. and O. steamer Victoria has arrived with one of her native crew suffering from a disease suspiciously like small-pox. She has been quarantined in consequence. RAILWAY CONSTRUCTION. Adelaide, January 22. A Royal Commission has been appointed to inquire into the advisability of constructing a railway line to the Queensland border. SHIPPING. Sydney.
