The steimer Little Agnes arrived from Rarotonga about 1 clock this morning. She left Rarotonga on the 14th at 6 p.m., and experienced S. and south-westerly winds to Minday Island, which was passed at 10 p.m. on the 22nd ; thence W. and westerly wind.'} were experienced until the Barrier W3.3 sighted at noon on the 26th, and a strong N. W. wind aid rain were met with crossing tie Hauraki Gulf. Last evenint; the well-known intercolonial trader, the schooner Three Cheers, Captain Bushell, reached port laden with " black diamonds," from Newcastle. She left that port ou the tth instant, and experienced easterly winds for two days, after which N.E bree.des were had till making the Three Kings. Light W. to N.W. winds prevailed down the coast till arrival. The s.a. Chelmsford, with several passengers and a full cargo of maize, arrived from Opotiki and Tauranga last night. Tenders are being invited by the Customs Department for a new lifeboat for the s.s. Hinemoa. A number of masters of steamers using the North Channel between Tientsin and Shanghai (says the China Daily News) have found to their cost within the last few years that the channel soundings as given on the charts, do not agree with the actual state ot affairs. There has b;en a silting up in some parts, and i shifting of the bed in others, so that it is not an uncommon occurrence for vessels to run ashore, as the soundings given on the charts cannot be depended upon. Within the last few days no less than five steamers have oeen ashore in some portion of the North Channel. A new survey is much to be desired. The s.s. Wairarapa is due here from Sydney this forenoon, and Messrs. Donald and Edenborough's island steamer Richmond will probably arrive from Tahiti and Rarotonga during the evening. _ _ Yesterday evening the Union S.S. Co.'s Te Anau, which is now under command of Captain Todd, took her departure for Sydney. She had a good number of passengers from this port, besides several booked through to Australia from Southern ports, while she was almost a full ship as regards cargo, a large shipment of maize being made here. The well-known trading schooner Medora is again in harbour from her ports of call on the Northern coast, whence she brings a fall freighting of gum, fungus, skins, and sundries. She is discharging at the Railway Wharf. _ The brigantine Lady Maoel, at No. 2 Jetty, and the barquentine Cuthona, at the Railway Wharf, are both undergoing repairs to their spars. H.M.s. Curacoa has lowered her topmasts and made everything snug for her stay in port. During yesterday Captain Stopford and officers were visited by the Mayor and Town Clerk, and several other townspeople took the opportunity of renewing previous acquaintance with her officers. Yesterday forenoon the Government steamer Hinemoa, Captain J. Fairchild, reached port from the Kermadec Group, bringing &s passengers about a dozen of settlers returning from the Denham Bay colony there. The Hinemoa left Wellington on the 16th instant, and after calling at the iiipit, Napier, and Portland Lighthouse, proceeded to the Kermadec Group, where she called at Denham Bay on Friday last, and shipped the se;:tlers and their impedimenta without mishap, the weather being luckily fine, and the sea smooth. Leaving there on Saturday, the Hinemoa called at Cuvier Island, where material and mails were landed. The Spit lighthouse and Ponui Island were next visited and some displaced buoys relaid. Captain Fairchild then steered for Auckland, ana stopping for an hour or so at the entrance, communicated with the Bean Rock lighthouse and then came up and berthed at the Railway Wharf. A quantity ot ammunition for Wellington was shipped during the afternoon, and the steamer is to continue her round of visits to the beacons and lighthouse stations on the Northern coast at noon today, returning to Wellington by the West Coast.
