WELLINGTON- NEWS NOTES.

[BY TELKORAPH.OWN CORRESPONDENT.] Wellington, Saturday. THE CITY ELECTION. The contest is said to be between Mr. McDonald and Messrs. Fraser and Jollicoo. Mr. Devino has retired. THE LAST OF THE STRIKE. The Southern delegates to the Conference left Wellington last night by the Wauaka. There was a demonstration made at their leaving. Some of their adherents took boat?, and followed tho steamer into the stream, cheering, and singing " Auld Lang Syne." Mr. J. A. Millar, Mr. Sandford, and some other members,of the Conference, yesterday interviewed the Mayor (Mr. C. Johnston), who laid down as. a basis of mediation the disaffiliation of the unions, and the abandonment of the resolution not to work with free labour. Both conditions were declined. The basis proposed by the Conference, but somewhat enlarged, was urged as reasonable, the free labourers to be allowed to come into the. unions without ballot or entrance fee. It is said Mr. Millar will endeavour to re-organise unionism in a new form. AUCKLAND AND WELLINGTON. The Post has an interesting leader this evening upon tho claims of Auckland to be unitod to Wellington by railway. It insist* that the whole colony suiTers by the isolation of Auckland. Admission is made that the special products of the North of the colony would be a source of permanent wealth to the colony if the homo markets were available by speedy transit.
