AUCKLAND HARBOUR BOARD.

The Auckland Harbour Board mob yesterday. Present: Messrs. Niccol (chairman), McMillan, Goldie, Savage, Dignan and Nathan. Approval of Plans.-The Marine Department, Wellington, notified that the Governor-in-Council had approved of the plans of the additions proposed to be made, to the outer western tee of the Queenstreet Wharf, and also of those of the proposed boat harbour at the entrance to the Queen street wharf. It was pointed out that this did not involve that the Government guaranteed the suitability of the design in either case, and that the Marine Engineer doubted whether the proposed facing of the boat harbour would stand in rough weather. The letter was received. . Land for the Admiralty. —Admiral Lord Scott, writing from Sydney, through his socretary, thanked tho Board for their offer to reserve for the use of the Admiralty land adjoining the Calliope Dock. The Lords of the Admiralty would be informed of this offer ; but he asked that the terms on which the land would be reserved, as well as tho depth of water frontage, bo stated. The letter was referred to the Finance and Legal Committee. Tub Moruuk. —A letter was received from the Auckland City Council, asking that the Board join with that body in providing a mortuary, as that institution will be used by the Harbour Board as well as by the Council. It was decided to inform the City Council that the Board were prepared to assist by providing a site. Advertising. — Mr. Alison, manager of the Devonport Ferry Co., notified that the signboards had been removed from tho outside walls of their offices at the ferry je'.ty, Quay-street, but asked that those inside the building be allowed to remain. The Board granted this permission until the end of the term of lease, the Works and Tariff Committee to consider the question of advertising upon the wharves. Office Accommodation. —Mr. C. Ranson, manager of the Northorn S.S. Co., asked that the company be allowed to give up possession of their present offices on the Queen-street Wharf, Nos. 152 and 13, for which they paid £26 per annum, and occupy the three offices of Elliott and Cammcll, and tho old Kotomahana office, for £40 a year. This was agreed to. StorageCharoes.—Messrs. L. D. Nathan and Co. v,tote as follows:—"During the recent strike of carters, cargo landed for us had of necessity to be placed in the harbour sheds, and to remain there until storage charges were incurred. This would not have been the case bub for the disarrangement of business caused by the strike. We met the emergency to the best of our ability, but the provisional arrangements made were of course insufficient to carry on our own carting and that of our wharf receiving agent also. We ask your Board to take into consideration the special difficulties under which we laboured, and to recognise the position by conceding such flotage charges lately incurred as may be shown to have come about from the strike emergency. We understand that other importers are similarly placed, and are intending to approach your Board with a like request." Mr. McMillan suggested that a concession should be made in all cases of this kind. The Chairman pointed out that a similar request received at a previous meeting had been declined. Eventually the matter was referred to the Finance and Legal Committee. Boat Slip.— Mr. H. Parker applied for permission to build a small boat slip on the foreshore opposite his property in Beach Road, Devonport. The request was granted on the usual conditions. Boat-building.—Mr. J. Waymouth applied for temporary occupation of an allotment at the end of the Hobson-street Wharf, to erect a shed for boat-building. The letter was referred to the Finance and Legal Committee. Compensation'.—Mr. C. Mullen, master of the cutter Wear, claimed the sum of £2 '2s lid for damage to a windlass and gear in getting the anchor of the cutter clear of a screw mooring belonging to the Board, and for repairs necessary in consequence. The account was passed for payment. Time-table.—:\lr. J. McEwan, Chelsea, complained of the irregularity with which the Northcote Ferry Company observed their timetable. The letter was referred to the company for explanation. Calliope Dock.—Mr. G. Fraser, in reply to a question from the Board, stated that twelve valves for the Calliope Dock pumps would cost £37 4s. The price for two pairs of slide bars for plunger rods would be £57 4s. It was resolved to buy the slide bars from Mr. Fraser, and to call tenders for the valves. Piles.—Mr." R. Mitchelson offered to sell totara piles to the Board, who decided to purchase a certain quantity, anil call for tenders for any further supplies. Rent.— An application was received from Mr. J. Smiih for a reduction of rent of tho coal depot at Railway Wharf. The Board resolved '.o sell tho lease by auction rather than i educe the rent. Works and Tariff Committee.—The following recommendations were made by the Works and Tariff Committee :—l. That an addition of 40 feet be made to Shed 1), on No. 2 eastern toe of Queenstreet Wharf. 2. That Messrs. T. and H. Cooke's application for refund of difference in amount of wharfage paid as between weight/ and measurement on kapok be declined, and the question of wharfage on kapok be deferred until the tariff is under consideration. 3. That dredging be done at outlet of main sewer in terms of agreement with the City Council. 4. That tho City Council be asked if they are willing to join the Board in the cost of constructing a silt pit to receive silt from the main sewer ; estimated cost £530; explanations as to silt pit to bo forwarded to the Council. 5. That tenders be called for repairing 100 feet of the breastwork in Quay-street, with option of the Board to have all Quay-street breastwork repaired if the contract is satisfactory. 6. That tenders be called for tarring and sanding wharves. 7. That tenders be called for renewing timber breastwork at pier head of Auckland Dock. 8. That an iron stay be provided for steam-pipe at Calliope Dock. 9. That four large ringbolts for mooring vessels to be fixed on the Quay-street Jetty. 10. That the drafting of conditions and specifications for cleaning, painting, and repairing buoys and beacons be deferred. 11. That the revision of tho by-laws be deferred. Tho report was adopted.
