Early yesterday morning the Northern S.S. Co.'s Wellington arrived from Russell and Whangarei, cringing a large number of passengers and a general cargo. In the evening she sailed for Whangarei. During yesterday the Union S.S. Co.'s Monowai was busily unloading her cargo of produce and sundries from Melbourne and the South. She is to sail this evening for Sydney. . Three coastal schooners, the Agnes Donald, Saucy Kate, and Ocean, arrived yesterday with full cargoes of potatoes. The two former left on the 15th inst., while the Ocean made a quick trip up of five days. We learn that the well-known brigantine Magellan Cloud has been sold by Messrs. »V. S. Laurie and Co., of Auckland, to a Noumea firm. The three-masted schooner Silver Cloud sailed on the 20th inst. from Oamaru with a load of produce for this port. On the completion of the diseh&rges of their cargoes of Southern produce, both the schooner Louie and ketch Kestrel will go to the Thames to load up with timber, the former for Lyttelton and the Kestrel for Kaiapoi. Last night, about half-past eight o'clock, the steamer Janet Nicoll, of Messrs. Henderson and Macfarlane's line, under charter to the Union S.S. Company, with a cargo of coal, arrived from Brisbane. Captain Henry reports that the steamer sailed from Brisbane on the 19th instant, and had light easterly winds and fair weather throughout the trip. The schooner Orpheus arrived last night from Lyttelton with a full cargo of potatoes. Captain Smith reports that slie sailed from the Canterbury port on September 14, and had a strong southerly gale till Cape Turnagain was passed. The East Cape was rounded on the 19th instant, and had easterly winds to port. The s.s. Chelmsford arrived last night from Tauranga and Mercury Bay, with passengers and cargo. Amongst the Ice.—An extract from a private letter of Captain W. J. Rogers, of the brigantine Jasper, to a friend in Hobart, furnishes the following particulars of a rather too close encounter with ice :— Whilst on the voyage from Cape Town to New Zealand on June 26, in latitude Sldeg. 30min. S. and longitude 120deg. W., the look-out man descried at daybreak several large bergs, distant about two or three miles, and right in the track of the vessel, which at the time was travelling eight or nine miles an hour—the ship making an E. by S. true course for Cape Horn. Had it been dark half-an-hour longer the consequences might have been j fatal to ship and crew. In all probability I during the night the vessel passed bergs, 1 although the darkness prevented them being seen. Two or three of the bergs we passed within a quarter of a mile or less were very large, being half to three-quarters of a mile long and from 300 feet to 350 feet high (rough guess), one flat-topped and snow-crowned, rolling with a gentle motion lOdeg., each oscillation occupying about half a minute. Other bergs were in the shape of peaked and jagged spires, etc. For four days the ship was in sight of these grand but floating dan- I gers. When she got clear of them much bad weather was experienced, but no damage sustained. It is rather unusual to see so much ice in the position of that met with so early in the season, and it was probably caused by extra current. Mariners generally expect to lee ice farther towards Cape Horn, and to the east of that liyely region."
