LAW WAND POLICE.
POLICE COURT.—Saturday. [Before Dr. Giles, R.M.] Drunkenness.—One man, a first offender, was fined 5s and costs, or 24 hours. William Joughin was fined 20s and costs, or 48 hours hard labour. Stealing Flowers. — A middle-aged woman was charged with having stolen flowers, to the value of sixpence, from the Albert Park grounds. Prisoner pleaded nob guilty. Alfred Huckstep, gardener, employed at the Park, deposed that he knew the accused. On the 12th September lie saw her about half-past three p.m. picking flowers. He spoke to her about it, and she informed him that they belonged to her as much as to anyone else. He had cautioned her three times previously for like conduct). Constable Howell deposed that he arrested the accused. When the former witness gave her in charge she threatened to knock him down with a stone. Prisoner maintained that the flowers were her own. Dr. Giles said he was determined not to pass such cases over with mere words. He would impose a sentence of three days' hard labour.
Ironmongery Thefts.—Benjamin Davis and Mary Ann Davis were brought up on remand, charged with the theft of ironmongery to the value of £120, the property of T. and S. Motrin and Co. On the application of Inspector Broham the case was further remanded for eight clear days, bail being allowed as before. Maintenance.—John James Hunter was charged with having failed to comply with an order of the Court for the maintenance of his wife, Bridget Ann Hunter. On the application of the derendanb this case was adjourned for one week.
