ELEMENT R Y SCIENCE IN THE PRIMARY SCHOOLS.
The committee appointed by the Auckland Board of Education to consider the question of the teaching of elementary science in the primary schools, submitted their report at a meeting of the Board yesterday. Having conferred with Professor Brown and the Inspectors, tie committee recommended that subject to.the provisions of clause 19 of the Government standard regulations, the Board shouU approve the programme drawn up by Professor Brown for the third year course of instruction in elementary physics, Giemistry, and physiology. A course of instruction in agricultural science had already been issued to committees and teachers >y Professor Thomas with the approval o' the Board. The committee suggested mat a circular setting forth in detail the arrangements approved for instruction in elenentary science, be issued to teachers. Accompanying the report were details of theinstruction to be given. The subjects wtve laws of health, forces, liquids and gases, heat, air, water, carbon, etc. Mr. Li'KE considered it a most important Lhing that elementary sceence should be taught in the public schools. I Mr. Upton said the Professors were asked if the scheme would involve the introduction of any new book, and he replied that it would not. The teachers should bo urged to construct, as far as possible, their apparatus. This would give a specific interest in the teaching. The scheme would not apply in those schools where agricultural science was taught in accordance with the instructions of Professor Thomas. The report was adopted.
