The Registrar-General estimates the population of the colony at 665,105, including 41,969 Maoris. The company laid on a special train, which conveyed over 1000 excursionists, and after the throw-off the speed of the train was reduced so as to keep abreast of the huntsmen. The road was lined with vehicles of all descriptions. The whole affair was a great success, and fortunately none of the spills were of a serious nature. The Feilding hounds wore secured for the occasion.
