THE FLAX INDUSTRY.
[by telegraph.— special REPORTER.] Wellington*, Monday. The Industries Committee, which has now nearly concluded the first part of its labours, namely, the inquiry into the flax trade, resumed its sitting this morning, and examined Mr. Gale, manager for Johnston arid Co. ; Mr. Duncan, of Levin and Co. ; Captain Babot, surveyor to the Shaw, Savill and Albion Company. Messrs. Gale and Duncan both advocated the classification of flax into three or four grades of quality, and approved of a bonus being offered for improved flax-dressing machinery. Captain Babot gave evidence about the methods of shipment of flux. To-mor-row, it is understood that Sir James Hector v.ill be examined, after which the Committee will proceed to prepare its report on the flax industry. This will be presented to the House as soon as it is ready, und prior to the commencement of enquiries l «to the dairy and wine industries.
