DEAD BODY FOUND AT LONG BAY.
Yesterday Sergeant McGrath, of Devonport, received information from Mr. Hodges, of Long Bay, that the body of a man was lying on the beach, at high water mark, at Long Bay, in an advanced state of decomposition. Sergeant Clarke and Constable Mackay proceeded in the afternoon by the s.s. Ruby to the locality indicated, and brought the body up to Auckland,, where it was placed in the morgue to await an inquest. The body te in such a state of decomposition that there is little to give a clue to the man's identity save the clothing. The following is the description —The man appears to be about 40 years of age, and sft. Sin. in height, and there was a little lock of long brown hair, turning grey, on the back of the head. Deceased nad no trousers on ; the other clothing, blue serge vest, white shirt, white flannel under shirt, and narrow leathern belt, knitted woollen socks, and elastio-side slippers. In the vest pocket was found a flag-station railway excursion ticket from Waimatnauku to Auckland, dated the 29th January (Jubilee Day). It is probable deceased was drowned in the harbour, and the body swept out round the North Head by the ebb tide. Inspector Broham is getting tho district constable to make inquiries respecting deceased at Wnimamauku. An inquest will be held to-day at Gleoson's hotel.
