ENGLAND AND THE COLONIES.
— o SPEECH BY LORD HOPETOUN. Melbourne, January 24. Lord Hopetdun, in the course of an address to the Native Association, said that the feeling of respect for the colonies was growing strongly at Home. Although it was true that expressions of disrespect for and unfriendliness toward the colonies had been made in the House of Commons, he could assure them that such expressions did not proceed from responsible or moderate men, but were merely the effusions of the irresponsible frivolity of men who were always ready to raise a cheer even if their utterances endangered the future of the British Empire. The responsible statesmen of Great Britain, said His Excellency, desired to draw closer the bond of union between the mother country and the colonies.
