TEE GOLDFIELDS.

[from our own correspondent.] Thames, Tuesday. Big Pump. — The pumping engine was stopped for an hour and a-half yesterday morning to permit two of the old pumping valves being replaced by new ones. The water in the shaft is now down 67 feeb below the 400-feet level, and, barring accidents, there appears to be every reason for believing the water will have been lowered to the 500 feet level this side of Christmas. May Queen. —A connection was made with the City of London shaft last evening, bub there still remains a few repairs to the drive to accomplish before prospecting operations can be commenced. Lone Hand.—The contractors in the low level made very good headway during last week, having driven a distance of between 25 and 30 feet. There is no change in the upper level workings. Crushing operations will be commenced in a few days. [BY TELEGRAPH. —OWN CORRESPONDENT?.] Thames, Tuesday. Waiotahi.— The monthly retorting for this company to-day produced 3060z lOdwt melted gold, for which 220 tons were crushed. Cambria.—ln breaking down the leader to-day in the second stope above the western drive at the intermediate level below No. 3, fifteen pounds picked stone were secured. Sax'on.—No. 2 reef in the new drivo at No. 5 level was opened out to about 20 inches of nicely mineralised ruby quartz in which colours of gold are seen.

Cambria.—The mine manager wired vesterday afternoon : 151b picked stone from second stope over the western drive intermediate below No. 3 level.
