Disputed Vote.—The matter of the payment of a sum of £15 towards the repairs to the rifle range, as voted by the Council, came up for discussion; Mr. Hastie moving that the minute recording the vote be rescinded. He considered that the decision was hastily given, and his reason for moving the resolution was in order that the matter should be settled, as at present a squabble was going on between the officers of the volunteer corps. The motion was lost. Cemktery Site.—Mr. Jackson moved, "That the offer of Mr. Moran to sell ten acres at Meadow Bank for a cemetery site be referred to Messrs. Brookfield and Sons for advice as to its legality." Mr. Jackson said that Mr. Moran proposed to sell the laud for £550, at a percentage, the interest aud sinking fund to come solely out of tho burial fees, and in addition to that he proposed to lend the Council a sum of IJIOO for the purpose of preparing the land for burials. The offer would not involve the Council in a monetary trouble, as the la'nd would be paid for oat of the fees. The Mayor said that on two, occasions a similar proposal was placed before the solicitors, and their reply was that thofiouncil could not enter into negotiations for the land as suggested, but they could as provided for in the Act, borrow money to make the purchase. Therefore, the step proposed in the motion was ultra viree, and he accordingly ruled it out of order.
