THE KAIWARRA MURDER.
CHEMIS' SENTENCE COMMUTED. [by TELEGRAPH.SPECIAL CORRESPONDENT.] Wellington, Tuesday. The death sentence pronounced a few weeks
ago on LouLs Chemis, who was found guilty of the murder of Thomas Hawkins, a , Wellington settler, was to-day commuted to penal servitude for life. Since the conviction and sentence, the solicitor for the condemned man has been busy procuring sworn testimony in connection with the case, which was laid before the Executive Council, audthe solicitor yesterday pleaded the cause of his client before His Excellency the Governor. There appears to be some doubt whether such a course is desirable, and in accordance with custom, and Mr. Hutchison has given notice' to ask the Minister of Justice whether the affidavits and other documents used for the purpose of obtaining a reprieve in the case of Louis Chemis will bo made public before the Executive decides «3 to the course the law should take, whether there is any precedent for the ex parte argument addresssed on behalf of Louis Chemis to His Excellency the Governor, reviewing the whole case and the affidavits and documents above referred to, and whether such a course is to be allowed in similar cases in the future?
