THE RAWSON INQUIRY.
[BY TELEGRAPH. —PRESS ASSOCIATION.] New Plymouth, Tuesday. Mr. Jones only called one witness, Mr. Standish, solicitor and Crown prosecutor, whose evidence consisted chiefly of stating what happened in Court during the native assault cases in which Jones was concerned. In cross-examination, Mr. Standish admitted that the deputation who waited on W. Bayley consisted of himself, Bellinger, McLaughlan, and W. Humphreys, and the last three with W. Bayley came to his (Mr. Standish's) office, and it was there decided to get Bayley as Mayor to send a letter to the Minister of Justice to ask for Mr. Rawson's removal. This matter was introduced at the Borough Council last night, when, in reply to a question, the Town Clerk said of the four names mentioned as forming the deputation only Mr. Bellinger was on the burgess roll. On resuming this morning, the Commissioners said as Jones had declined going on with his charges further they would direct the names of the others who had communicated with them to be called. This was done, but there was no appearance of any one. Commissioner Reid said Mr. Jellicoo, beforo he left, had intimated ho would nob call evidence in Duncan McGregor's case, so it was closed. Mr. Samuel said he wished the Commission to glance at tho records, put in. Commissioner Reid said they had considered the question, and came to tho conclusion that it was outside the scope of their power. Mr. Samuel said he thought it would be but right, and wanted to have a thorough investigation into everything. The Commissioners intimated that as no business was before them the proceedings were closed. Mr. Reid, Solicitor-General, and tho shorthand writer connected with the Rawson Commission, leave for Wellington by Friday's express. Colonel Haultain will go on to Auckland.
