A CONVICTION QUASHED.
[BY TELEGRAPH. —PRESS ASSOCIATION.] Ditnedin, Monday. At the Banco sittings of the Supreme Court, F."*R. Chapman appeared for Mi , . Justice Williams, to ask that the conviction of two debtors named Hugh McLeod and Finlay McLeod, sentenced at Invercargill on the 30th ult., by District Judge Broad to three months' imprisonment, for not keeping proper books, should be quashed. The ground on which the application was based, was that the order of commitment was not signed till after Judge Broad had left the Bench. None of the other parties were represented. Mr. Solomon, who had appeared for the Official Assignee, stating that he waa not instructed. He said after debtors were punished there appeared to be a revulsion of feeling in favour of the young men. His Honour quashed the conviction. He said the interval between the sentence and signing was very email, but that did nob affeob the principle, which he thought he was bound to follow until reversed by a higher Court.
