AUSTRALIAN NEWS.

A YOUTH CHARGED WITH MURDER.

Sydney, January 16. A youth named Sawers lias been arrested at Young on a charge of murder alleged to have been committed at Melbourne, NEW ZEALAND LAND MORTGAGE COMPANY. Sydney, January 16. The Sydney Morning Herald, commenting on Sir E. Stafford's remarks at the annual meeting of the New Zealand Land Mortgage Company, urges that Australia is a better field for investment, because its people are less heavily burdened with debt than New Zealand, and that the latter colony finds it more difficult to pay interest on loans than Australia. New Zealand has had to pay away in interest a larger proportion of its produce than the Australian Colonies, and by the depreciation of such produce New Zealand is the greatest sufferer. The Herald argues that it is clearly recognised in well-informed circles that there has been an over-investment of capital in New Zealand for such a limited population, and capitalists naturally turn to a better field tor their money.

[Our Sydney contemporary has been misled by an error in the cable message relating; to Sir E. Stafford's speech. The company never proposed to invest its funds in Australia. What was proposed and agreed co at the last general meeting held in London was to commence business in the Argentine Republic. It is to this course which Sir E. Stafford takes objection. No doubt the SydneyJMorning Herald would prefer that the money of the company should be invested in New South Wales. That, however, is a matter for the company. As for our contemporary's disparaging references to New Zealand as a field for investment, we can dismiss them with equanimity, in view of the fact that foreign and Australian capital is once more eeeking investment in this colony; and that our prospects are again assuming quite a rosy aspect.]
