SPORTING.

THE AUCKLAND RACING CLUB'S SUMMER MEETING. TRAINING NOTES.

Trainers wore rather late in turning up at Ellerslie yesterday morning, and it was after five before work commenced. Antelope and Lioness were the first out, and they each put in a couple of rounds on the tan, the hrst-named moving with great freedom. Pretender accomplished a like task in good style, and then all eyes were turned to old Nelson, who came on to the track clad in neck sweaters. He galloped twice round on the tan by himself, when Raglan joined him and they put in two more circuits, finishing part of tho last at a smartish pace. The pair moved very freely. The two-year-old colt Remnant (by Robinson Crusoe—Patch) was cantered to the five-furlong post on the course proper, and he slipped over the remainder of the journey at three-quarter pace, moving in excellent style. .Lochiel (in neck sweaters) and Enid (stripped) put in three circuits on the tan at a good working pace, both moving well, the first named being very anxious to improve the pace. Hilda had Pußchka and Balista as companions twice round the plough, finishing up fast. The first named moved quite soundly while galloping, but she was a trifle sore on being brought back to her box, and if the tracks get much harder it is thought that she will occasion her trainer some anxiety. Manton and British Lion were partnered together for twice round on the plough, both moving throughout with great freedom. Rataplan and Tartar went once round in company, when the former dropped out and On Guard joined the son of Musket for another circuit. The Steeplechase favourite, Mangaohane, who appears to be very well, put in three circuits on the plough at half puce. Lady Norah, Recruit, The Squire, Landseer, Messenger, Ma Petite Fillo, Warrior, Sir Walter and Loch Ness and Fiesole were also out, but they only performed slow work. It was rumoured at the course yesterday that W. Brown was coming up to ride Nelson in tho Cup, but on inquiring from Major George on tho point, he told me that tho matter of a rider was yet undecided. YV. Clifford will, I understand, have tho mount on Lochiel.

THE BETTING. Major George yesterday accepted 500 to 75 in one hand about Xelson's chance in the Cap, when 100 to 20 was the best offer, which was also accepted. 100 to 33 would have been accepted about Lochiel, but 20 to 10 was the best price on offer about the son of Prince Charlie. The prices on offer last night were as follows : — 2 to L agst Lochiel 3to 1 — Manton 4 to I — Hilda sto 1 — Iselson 7to 1 — British Lion 10 to I — Leopold 10 to I — Clogs The prices will be called over at Tattersails to-night.
