THE SELECTION OF GOVERNORS.
DISCUSSION IN THE LORDS. SIR H. PARKES' MOTION. London, November 20. In the House of Lords, Lord Dunraveit said that if a colony is granted tho right to select its own Governors, it might equally ask to have a voice in. the choosing of a sovereign of the Empire. He admitted, however, that the great autonomous colonies might reasonably expect their Governors to be gentlemen of a certain status and position. Every legitimate means ought to be taken to ascertain before-hand it the proposed appointments are likely to be acceptable. %
Lord Knutsford replied that he wjia not unmindful of the resposibility that devolved upon him.
Sydney, November 22. Sir Henry Parkes' motion has beell carried by 45 against 2. It provides for an address to the Queen, expressing the opinion that the gentlemen who may in future be appointed as Governors of the colonies should have experience of the conduct of public affairs, either in high political office or in the Imperial Parliament ; further', that, while disclaiming any wish to interfere with the functions of the Queen's advisers, it is thought advisable, reasonable, and in strict accord with the privileges constitutionally con - ferred upon Australian subjects that the Government should be informed who is the person selected before he is actually appointed.
.An amendment proposed by M,r. Buchanan in favour of the political separation of New South Wales from England was rejected.
