Yesterday morning about 7 o'clock, the Northern S.S. Co.'s lona arrived with passengers and freight from Tauranga and Mercury Bay, and about an hour and a-half later sailed again for her weekly trip to the Barrier. The Union S.S. Go's, cargo steamer Ohau was yesterday floated into the Auckland dock to receive an overhaul. She will leave port on Tuesday next, for Greyinouth direct. Although she began to load only on Monday last, such good progress lias been made with the American barque Rebecca Crowell, that she is almost a full ship, having a valuable freight of about 4,G00 cases i.auri gum | under hatches. Captain Bray expects to sail ! for Mew York to-morrow forenoon. _ ' About half-past one yesterday the Union ] S.S. Co.'s favourite steamer Mararoa took : her departure lor the South and Melbourne, ' with a good number of passengers and general cargo. The reason of her delay was that she had to take in some thirty tons transhipments ex lonic, for the small coastal ports. The work of discharging the steamship lonic was briskly carried on yesterday. Some very cumbersome and weighty bed plates, &c., for the defence works at North Shore, were landed and placed under the big crane, to be in readiness for transit to the forts. At the Customs yesterday the schooner Dunedin was cleared for her usual port of Napier. She sailed curing the afternoon with a full cargo of timber, cement, and tiles. The clipper ship Wairoa, which has been on the berth for London for some weeks, has now completed her loading, and will clear at the Customs to-day. Her carra consists of the usual colonial staples of gum, wool, leather, bark, etc. She will probably sad early 011 Saturday. By cable advice from Brisbane we learn that the locally - owned brigantine Darcy Pratt sailed yesterday from that port for Auckland. Having finished taking in her timber for East Coast ports, at the Kauri Timber Co.'s mills, the schooner Waiapu was yesterday' , morning hauled alongside the Queen-street ] 1 Wharf to take in stores, etc. She will sail in ! a day or so. At the Railway Wharf the island steamer Richmond was busily employed yesterday in receiving cargo tor 'longa, Tahiti, etc. ±he popularity of the direct steamer lonic, now in port, with her passengers is wellknown and a compliment has been paid to her officers by all the passengers booked to Southern ports electing to wait and go down the coast with her rather than be transshipped. About ten o'clock yesterday morning the 1 Government steamer Stella took her depar- 1 ture for Cuvier Island, for which she has a large quantity of timber, bricks, and other material for the new lighthouse 011 board. When this has been landed, the steamer will make a cruise round the northern and western coasts, calling at all the lighthouse stations en routed 1

The departure of the s.s. lonic for the South is fixed for 5 p.m. to-morrow. She proceeds from Auckland direct to Wellington, and will probably afterwards call at Napier and Dunedin. Yesterdav evening the s.s. Wellington arrived from Whangarei, with a large number of nassengers and a quantity of gum and other j freight.
