FARMERS' FLOUR MILL.

TO THE EDITOR. ; \

Farmers are proverbial for gramMing, but I think there are not many ; but will admit that, in the present depressed imes, the low prices which they receive for heir produce afford ample and all-sufficient reasons for so doing. 1 Now, I would like,to all their attention to the. fact . that, if we ire satisfied. with grumbling, we will just \ave to grin and bear it; but ' that if: as a >ody we pub oar shoulders to the wheel and .ry and help ourselves, we l may do-, somehing towards bettering our position. There : eems to' bo no union amongst farmers, and •> consequence wa are at" the % mercy of others.Strialdrig at ; present of wheat, I would ask the farmers of Otjihuhu, Mangere, !,.v.patoctou, / Flao Bush, and adjoining, districts, is it not possible for them to combine ind erect a flour mill of their own ' in some central position, and , grind their own wheat? 1 think that,. if by >so ; doing they were able to obtain, say, even sixpence i bushel more, the money expended would be a profitable investment, even if it yielded iittle or no interest, as being divided among •<o many shareholders it' would not be severely felt, and the increase in price of the wheat would far more-than repay them. Further, in . many cases there would be a _Toat saving in the . carriage of the grain. The union of the farmers in this way might also be utilised iin obtaining manures and seeds for them at less expense. If the money invested ■ by farmers in some of the Auckland companies during the last few years had been put in a flour mill ; it would, £ believe, have been : better for themselves and for the country.' It is worthy of our earnest attention, and I hope this may induce some of our , more able, experienced, and influential tillers of- the soil to take, up the matter. I believe, with, a little push and determination,' it could soon be an accomplished fact.l am, eta, - : , , ■ ■: • S. WOODSIDE. . Manurawa, October 13, 1888. .> (
