About 3 a.m. yesterday the s.s. Fiona, Captain Curphey, arrived from Fiji with a full cargo of 850 tons of raw sugar from the Ba River mills for the Colonial Sugar Refining Company. Captain Curphey brought his vessel into port himself, and anchored off the Calliope Dock until the morning, when he steamed up to the Sugar Company's wharf at Chelsea, where the work oi discharging was promptly begun. The sugar so far has turned out in good condition, and it is expected that the whole will be got out by Saturday, when the Fiona v ill proceed to Whangarei, there to take in her back loading of 1000 tons of coal for the Ba River mills. The Fiona sailed from Lancala Bay on the 4th instant, and for four davs had moderate weather, and afterwards encountered strong S.W. gales till arrival. The Fiona is a fine steel twin-screw steamer of 817' tons gross and 414 tons list register, and is quite a new boat, having been built in Glasgow in 1883 specially for the shallow wa'„er traffic on the Fiji rivers. She carries a, crew of 28 men, and is fitted with compound engines, her average speed being 11 knots in moderate weather. Mrs. Curphey a.nd two children accompany the captain on the present trip. The local agent of the China Steam Navigation Company, Mr. H. B. Morton, received cable advice yesterday that the s.s. Taiyuan had left Hongkong for Auckland direct on October 9th, and may therefore be expected to reach this port about the end of the current month. She has on board a full cargo of tea, sugar, rice, etc., of which 300 tons are for Auckland. The ketch Violet sailed yesterday morning for the Thames, with a cargo of 30 tons coal, % tons hour, 30 sacks oats, and 20 packages dynamite. Yesterday morning early the ship Crusader pauled out into the stream from the berth at ;he Railway Wharf, where she has been taking in her cargo. She has had quick despatch at the hands of her agents; and stevedore since she arrived on August 26th, having discharged her inward cargo and loaded again during her six weeks' stay in port. She has now under hatches a mixed cargo of the ordinary staples of colonial ex- 1 ports worth over £25,000, the details of which ] arc given above. The ship was cleared out at the Customs for London direct yesterday j afternoon, and Captain Perriam expects to get away early this morning. Early yesterday morning the Northern S.S. Co.'s Douglas arrived from the Bay of Plenty and Whangamata, with 410 sacks maize and sundries. The s.s. Wellington was floated out of dock yesterday morning, and is receiving painting, etc., at the Hobson-street Wharf. Yesterday afternoon the s.s. Staffa arrived from the Bay of Plenty with a full cargo of maize and several passengers. Two large barques arc shortly to arrive here from Java with raw sugar for the Colonial Refining Co., but up to the present no advice of their names or date of sailing lias come to hand. The barque Rebecca has almost completed her unloading at the No. 2 jetty. The Maud Graham, Captain Fitzgerald, arrived last evening from Lyttelton. She left Lyttelton on September 27, and experienced a strong head wind and bad ■weather until arriving in Auckland.
