QUARANTINING IMPORTED STOCK.

The information which appeared in our columns on Wednesday, together with our sub-leader of Thursday, has had the effect of raiding a strong feeling of indignation on the part of the stockowners and farmers of the Auckland district. For the purpose of eliciting the opinions of those directly interested, it was decided to convene a meeting in Auckland for yesterday afternoon. The meeting, which was both influential and representative, was held on the premises of Messrs. Hurst and Co. Mr. John Phillipps was requested to preside, and in his opening remarks referred to the information which had appeared in the columns of the Herald. He had been given to understand that the Minister in charge of the Stock Department had altogether ignored the recommendation of the Stock Committee appointed by the House. That committee had resolved on two quarantine stations, an island in the Auckland harbour, and Quail Island, Lyttelton, which they thought would be sufficient for the whole of the colon}'. The statement that Auckland had been ignored and Wellington substituted was detrimental to the interests of the stockowners of this island, and ho hoped the meeting would take some decided action in the matter. After several of those presenthad expressed their opinions, it was resolved, "That a telegram be sent to the lion, the Minister of Lands, protesting against the omission of Motuihi from the list of quarantine stations for stock imported to this colony." A sub-committee was appointed to carry out this resolution, and the meeting closed with a vote of thanks to the chairman. The resolution carried at the meeting was subsequently telegraphed to the hon. the Minister of Lands, Wellington. Telegrams on the same subject, and representing the opinions of the community generally, were also sent by Messrs. R. Monk, T. Peacock, F. Lawry, and D. Goldie, M.H.R.'s.
