THE CHESHIRE SALTFIELDS. London, September 14. A company has been formed, with a capital of three millions, for the purpose of purchasing the Cheshire salifields.
CARDINAL MORAN. London, September 14. At the request of Cardinal Moran, Dr. Haggans, of Meath, has been appointed _ auxiliary bishop at Sydney. His Eminence will take with him to Sydney a valuable marble altar, one of the jubilee presents made to His Holiness the Pope.
THE POPULATION OF IRELAND. London, September 14. Latest statistics show that during the quarter ended June 30th the Irish population had decreased 37,000.
THE O'CONNELL MEMORIAL. London, September 14. The amount subscribed towards the O'Connell Memorial Church is £12,500. America and Australia subscribed £4500 each, and Ireland £1900.
THE IMPERIAL INSTITUTE. London, September 14. The Mansion House Fund of £22,000 has been handed over to the committee of the Imperial Institute.
THE NEW ZEALAND LOAN AND MERCANTILE AGENCY CO. London, September 14. The New Zealand Loan* and Mercantile Company are offering a quarter of a million 4 per cent, debentures at 97.
TREATMENT OF REFRACTORY ORES.
LONDON, September 14. Mr. W. C. Roberts Austen, F.R.S., Chemist and Assayer at the Royal Mint, -will accompany Sir F. D. Bell to Freiburg, Saxony, on Wednesday, for the purpose of reporting on the refractory ores of that town.
