ACTION AGAINST A CLUB STEWARD. [IJV TELEGRAPH. —PRESS ASSOCIATION*.] C riRisTC , Saturday. The case of Williams v. Campbell, in which the plaintiff sought bo recover from the defendant, who wa<? one of the stewards nt Plumpton Park races, the amount of money won by his horse, Sultan, was argued to-day, before Mr. Beetham, Resident Magistrate. Mr. Harper, for the defendant, contended '.hat the stewards were not liable for stakes, as under the rules of racing now in force. the treasurer or secretary ot tho club was the stakeholder. Mr. Nolle, for the plaintiff, contended that the defendant, by accepting office as steward, had rendered himself liable for the safe keeping and proper allocation of stakes, Mr. Bell, the real proprietor but nominal secretary, having filed the day after the meeting. Judgment was reserved.
