New '.Plymouth, Friday. The seal caught here on Tuesday was liberated to-day by order of the Collector of Customs, this being the close season. The captors were greatly disappointed, as they were making money by exhibiting it in town.
Woodville, Friday. At the Police Court three village settlers, named John Jenkins, James Parker, and William Stiggins, were committed for trial for killing and taking away the meat of & cow belonging to H. R. Holder.
Wellington, Friday. Three men, named Hammerton, Eagerton, and Chalker, appeared before the magistrate yesterday morning, charged with playing the three-card trick, the former on the Basin Reserve, and the others on tha wharf. Hammerton was convicted and sentenced to a month's imprisonment. The other two were acquitted. A fireman named Reilly was sentenced to three months' imprisonment for assaulting Captain Barlow, of the steamer Tainui.
Timaru, Friday. The Borough Council last night resolved to call for alternative tenders for lighting the streets by gas or by electricity, 100 incandescent lamps being stipulated for in the latter case.
Blenheim, Friday. The Borough Council to-night decided to order from London what is stated to be a larger fire engine than any in the colony. The order includes mains., hydrants, etc., to cost about £1200.
Ijtvercargiix, Friday. At the meeting of the Education Board to-day it was stated that the- Minister of Education had appointed Mr. Fulton, M.H.R., Otago School Commissioner, vice Dr. Menzies, deceased. The chairman said this was ultra vires, as the appointment lay with the Board. It was resolved to appoint Mr. Thomas Denniston in the room of Dr. Menzies. An amendment to the effect that the Minister be asked by what authority he had appointed Mr. Fulton wa. negatived.
