COMMERCIAL.

New Zealand Herald Office, Thursday evening. The Customs duties to-day amounted to £'1669 3s sd. Trade is steady, and there is little to report. The bills due on the fourth have been met better than was anticipated, considering the dullness of trade for the last month. The removal of the coast steamers by the Union Company, and the putting of them on as colliers from Westport and Greymouth, has upset calculations of produce lines. The necessity to supply coal for the weekly big steamers calling at the principal ports is paramount. It is impossible to forecast the result of the strike, or its probable ending, but it may lie regarded as likely that the difficulty will be ended in a month. In the meantime prices are all influenced by freight charges, &c. There is nothing new in the import market. Kerosene keeps very stiff, notwithstanding the arrival of the Albert Russell, the low test supply in which is found to be very short, three-fourths of the cargo being high test. I There is a somewhat easier feeling in pearl barley. Oatmeal is firm at previous rates. 16,000 bags of oats going to Melbourne in one steamer, the Hauroto, shows the drain going on. In the dried fruit market there is a better demand for dates, and muscatels are scarce.

' The arrival to-day of the Killochan supi plies the market with many short lines. . ___ In the metal trade we hear of a sale of 200 casks wire nails, ex Crusader, m one line. Teas have been more active. Auction disposals have been good, sellers and buyers alike being satisfied. , , . ~ Maize has been more plentiful during the last week, but the market being bare it is all I distributed. The quality is now better, and j iu firmer condition. Price, 2s 4d, for parcels !ex wharf. . , , ! Wheat: Milling, no quotations; fowl 1 wheat, good, whole. 3s : inferior, 2s 9d. I Oats : Firmer at Southern ports, to the extent of 2d per bushel. Potatoes are declining. Of Oamarus there are none ; Canterbury's, 72s 6d ; local, 655. Flour : An advance of 10s per ton is recorded during the week, and a further rise is expected. . . In the local produce market, the price ot ecrrs remains unchanged, at (id per dozen wholesale and M per dozen retail. Dairy butter is Incoming plentiful, and, as indicated last week, a tall in price has now taken j place. Best dairy butter is now quoted at j lOd per lb wholesale and Is per lb retail. KAURI GUM MARKET. ! Notwithstanding the heavy supplies, there : is a strong and active demand for good quali--1 ties of ordinary gum, at full current rates. So far, the excessive production lias not been checked in the slightest degree. For the eight expired months of we have received 5U67 tons against 6456 tons for the whole of last year. The supplies for the month of August were 715 tons, and for five days of September about 52 tons. We quote : — Fair ordinary, 29s to 30s ; best ordinary, Sis ; and East Coast, 43s to 445. Wool, hides, and skins were pitched in u--.ua! quantities at the Durham Yards on Tuesday, and were ste.oii!y competed for, but there was a decline in the value of hides, particularly for heavies. Cattle: There has been increased animation in the market, particularly in stores, and there remains an unsatishetl demand for steers of all description-:, and particularly for grown ones in fresh conditio!!, as also for empty cows. There was a short muster at Newmarket on Tuesday, but a good one at Papakura on Wednesday. Dairy stock were well represented, , k nd were well competed for, notwithstanding the food muster at the Utter place.
