FOOTBALL.

On: Saturday next the third contest between the English team of footballers and the local representative players will take place at Potter's Paddock, when it is expected that a large number of spectators will witness the match. The Rugby Union have made all the necessary arrangements for the match, and the gates will bo open at one o'clock, and play will commence at three sharp. Tickets will be sold on all the tramcar?, in order that no crush may take place at the gates. The rival tilteens will be driven to the ground in breaks, a procession of which is to start from Fort-street at two p.m. A band will head the line, followed by the English and Auckland teams in order, and the officers o: the Union and others. Yesterday evening a practice match was held in the Metropolitan Ground, in which the " reps," including the emergencies, McLean and Murray, were pitted against seventeen Possibles. The only score was a goal kicked byLecky from a try of Hobson's. 'wing to the uneven nature of the ground the game was not a fair test of the qualities of either side, and was altogether of a scrambling order. Crowe, playing for the Possibles, played a hard game, while Lusk, on the same side, showed good kicking powers, but was not called upon to do any tackling, in which he failed so signally on Saturday last. Tanfield proved himself in excellent form at halfback, and made several excellent runs, besides collaring well. Among the forwards Edwards, Henderson, Muir, and Baxter were the best. For the Probable team, McLean did sterling work in the scrum, and was equally good in the open and at tackling, and certainly deserves a place in the team. McKenzie, Hobson, and Lecky also proved themselves to be well worthy of their selection, all "being in rare fettle. Heffernan worked hard, and so did Stewart and Gould, but both of the lastnamed pair are clearly inferior to McLean. Stephenson, at half-back, mulled his takes badly, and needs to improve greatly in this respect. Ryan kicked well, bub was slow in getting the leather away. Masofield was in line form, and kicked with more judgment than usual, while he made a couple of dashing runs uphill. Herrold and Meldrum played with fine combination, and frequently gained ground by well-executed concerted passing, running, and kicking. Braund and Brown were, as usual, well up to their work. <$An interesting match is to be played this afternoon between teams representing the beer and beef interests in the city. The teams will drive to Ellerslie, starting from Durham-street at two o'clock. The players engaged are: — Beer: Stone (captain), Doyle, Brodie, J. Loombe, Phillips, Bell, Ross, Sutcliffe, Grey, Hackett, Brown, Lynch, Huntsman, Hewitt, A. Loombe; emergencies, Glynn, Luks. Beef: Woods, Bomber, Eustace, Mulgrew, Curtis, Bright, Stewart, Stevens, Cox, McGuinness (captain), Rennar, Thomas, C. Galvin, McLeod, Sandall; emergencies, J. Galvin, Carter, Rout, Kilgour. Hawera, Tuesday. It is pretty well settled that the English football team shall play a return match with Taranak? at Hawera.
