AN APPEAL FOR OUR SICK.

TO THE EDITOR. Sir, —Before we suffer to be divided and spoiled that beautiful heritage bequeathed to the sick and afflicted in Auckland—the Hospital site— you permit a short appeal ? The effort to get the Public Trustee to lease a portion of those lovely grounds for a workhouse site will, ii sranted,5 ranted, prove a lasting evil to our city, 'hose grounds are not a bit too large ; for in a few years we shall want pretty recreation and vegetable gardens; large drying grounds; sites for a school of anatomy and a training home for nurses; so, far be it from us to diminish them. I appeal that the lease be not granted, for other good sites are available. Especially would I deplore contracting them for a workhouse. The two things are incompatible. To a hospital there are necessarily sent the fever-stricken of all classes; also the hard-working but poor labouring man or his wife, or children who may be stricken down with accident. It is one of the glories of our day that we cheerfully bear the burden of hospital expense for the sake of the deserving and unfortunate poor. No care is too tender, no attention too good for the deservedly poor when stricken in the midst of their days : but to build a workhouse beside them would contract their needful space, and throw a shadow over the minds of the afflicted. In this country there is no reason for paupers if men will be sober, and sell their labour at a fair price.— am etc., Parent.
