MAINTENANCE OF THE FIRE BRIGADE.

TO THE EDITOR. SiR,-r-Some of our sapient City Councillors, evidently becoming quite desperate in their heroic retrenchment struggles, are again discussing this vexed question, and naively propose to evade their just civic responsibilities by casting their burdens upon other shoulders. One venerable CityFather, like a "second Daniel," expressed his opinion "that the City Council had no fight to support the Brigade, although they might assist." Property-owners pay rates and elect councillors to disburse the same for the general good, and among other things expect the lives and properties of citizens to be protected from fire by an ample water supply and efficient Fire Brigade—lam &c -' a . , Ratepayer.
