SETTLEMENT IN THE COUNTRY.

TO THE EDITOR. Sir, Many people are leaving here for Sydney and Melbourne, notwithstanding that we have thousands of acres of good land unoccupied, and room enough for several millions of people, if they will only settle on the land. I feel certain that many leave here because they cannot find work in the town, and do not know the terms upon which they can have land in the country. I would, therefore, suggest, that the Government, or local authorities, have large posters printed, giving full information as to where land can be had on easy terms, giving plain information as to leaseholds, deferred payments, freeholds, and distance north or south from Auckland, means of conveyance and expense, also what arrangements would be made for their being housed and fed for a few months. If some such large and readable posters were placed •in the railway stations, ferry waiting-rooms, Customhouse, Post Office and branches, Free Library, and other public places, many people would avail themselves of the welcome information, remaining in the colony contented and happy with comfortable homes, contributing to the prosperity of this magnificent colony, which must prosper when we can force the Government to curtail their lavish expenditure.—l am, &c., John Bridgewateb, Auckland, September 1, 1888.
