ONEHUNGA BOROUGH COUNCIL.
The adjourned meeting of the Onehunga Borough Council was held in the Council Chamber last night. There were present: Messrs Tapp (in the chair), W. Shaldrick, Jackson, Burden and Goldsbury. New Members. —The Mayor-elect and Messrs J. J. Austin, A. Dunwoodie, J. Smith, and J. J. Shaldrick, made the usual declaration, and took their seats. Finance Committee. — The following gentlemen were appointed the Finance and General Purposes Committee :—Messrs A. Dunwoodie, J. J. Austin, and J. J. Shaldrick.
Rate. —" Mr. Jackson moved that a sum of 9d be levied on all rateable property in the borough, to be paid in one sum on the Ist September." Mr. Tapp seconded the motion. He thought that 9d was sufficient during the present depressed times. As an amendment, Mr. W. Shaldrick moved, seconded by Messrs Goldsbury, "That the matter of finances be referred to the Finance Committee to report upon at next meeting." The amendment was seconded by Mr. Goldsbury, and after a discussion, was agreed to. Opposing the Water Scheme. — The matter of a memorial forwarded by several burgesses, opponents to the water scheme, to the borough engineers was discussed, and finally referred to the Finance Committee. Notice of Motion.—Mr. Shaldrick gave notice to move at next meeting that all persons who are in arrears to the Council for rates, rents, &c., be notified that the sum in arrear must be paid within seven days, failing which legal proceedings will be taken for the recovery of the same."
