THE MINERS' STRIKE.

GAS SUPPLY IN SYDNEY. APPEAL TO CONSUMERa OFFERS OF COAL FROM ENGLAND. AUCKLAND SUPPLIES. [press association.] Sydney, August 27. The engineer to the Sydney Gas Company is of opinion that they cannot; maintain the preseiit gas supply for more than a month. The Gas Company has requested private consumers to abstain from using gas, in order to keep public places provided with light. In order to strengthen the hands of the miners in their strike, the Seamen's Union have decided to withdraw the ballot in connection with the Maritime Labour Council difficulty, and also to levy £1 per month on members of the Union' Melbourne, August 27. Advice has been received by cable' from Cardiff offering to land coal here by steamers at 25s per ton. If the coal strike lasts any length of time the result will be most serious to a large number of tradesmen. j Mr. Gillies, Premier, has granted the; Union Company of New Zealand permission to coal their New Hebrides mail steamer in New Zealand during the continuance of the Newcastle strike. Greymocth, Monday. The Grey Valley Coal Company haveraised the price of coal to all dealers inr. town. They in turn raised the price of coal of all kinds of round coal 2s 6d per ton, and increased small screened coal by Is 6d. The Gas Company, it will be seen, advertises that the price of coke is advanced by 5s per ton. This is in consequence of the strike, as it is from Newcastle coal thai? the Gas Company makes the coke. It had been coming into extensive use, not only for smithy purposes, bat in houses.
