DR. HECTOR AND GOLD AT THE THAMES.

< . TO THE EDITOR. Sir,— am surprised at Mr. Gillies characterising "Pollex's" statement as to Dr. Hector's conclusion respecting gold at the Thames- I recollect it well. At the time I was thinking of investing money there, but was deterred by Dr. Hector's announcement. Mr. 1 Gillies need not be alarmed for the in terests of science by this reminiscence. Scientists, as well as others, have made great mistakes. What does Mr. Gillies think of Darwin's theory respecting the origin of coral islands ? Surely science has made more blunders than even theology. Ido not knew who " Pollex " is, neither was I aware of his • article before I saw Mr. Gillies' letter.—X am, &c., ; ■. Truth.
